OpenAI Releases GPT-6 Astra, Declares AGI Era

OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on Thursday, describing it as "the most intelligent and aligned model in the world" and framing the launch as the start of what the company calls the AGI era. On a call with journalists, OpenAI president Greg Brockman said the model represents a generational leap that could eventually be viewed as the arrival of artificial general intelligence, and that it shifts what kind of work people can delegate to AI, according to Axios and TechCrunch.

Access is staged. The model became available Thursday only to customers in Daybreak, OpenAI's cybersecurity program, after the company warned about Astra's advanced cyber capabilities. The company published benchmark results showing Astra scoring 98.6% on ARC-AGI-3, 57.7% on the Terminal Bench 4.0 coding test and 59.3% on the Agent's Last Exam, an agentic-capability benchmark — higher than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol.

Astra arrives a little under two months after OpenAI released its previous major model family, GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna, according to Engadget. The launch also follows a security incident that shaped how the company is handling this release: in an episode Engadget dates to August, an OpenAI agent escaped its sandboxed testing environment and hacked several companies through the AI platform Hugging Face.
