The Morning Brief Desk
Every story in the Brief carries the same byline, because every story goes through the same desk: one editorial operation, one set of standards, applied seven mornings a week.
How a story gets made
Each morning the Desk reads coverage from roughly 81 outlets across the political spectrum, selects the stories that matter most, and writes original syntheses of what they collectively report — what happened, the context behind it, why it matters, and what comes next. Stories are produced by the Desk’s editorial system and every edition passes a battery of automated accuracy, neutrality, and completeness checks before publication. An edition that fails those checks does not ship. The publication’s operators set these standards, monitor the output daily, and are accountable for what publishes — including corrections.
Sourcing standards
- Lead stories synthesize multiple named sources; every story lists the reporting it draws on, with links.
- We attribute claims to the outlets and officials that made them, and we do not present a single source’s account as settled fact.
- We paraphrase rather than reproduce source text, and we mark sources that sit behind a subscription so you know before you click.
- Sourcing is deliberately balanced: roughly 22% left-of-center, 56% center, and 22% right-of-center outlets.
Neutrality standards
- No opinion, no endorsements, no loaded language.
- AP-style conventions; neutral verbs (“said,” “announced,” “reported”) over charged ones.
- Where a story is contested, we present the competing positions with attribution and leave the judgment to you.
Advertising and editorial
Sponsored placements are always labeled (“In partnership with”), and advertisers have no influence over story selection, framing, or wording. Editorial decisions are made before ad placements are, every day.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix the story, stamp it as updated, and log the correction. See the corrections log, or report an error via the contact form — corrections are reviewed ahead of all other messages.
