New York Child Dies in Record Measles Outbreak
A child in New York died of measles Monday, the state’s first death from the disease in more than 30 years, amid the largest national outbreak since 1991.

A child in upstate New York died Monday after contracting measles, state health officials announced. It is New York’s first reported measles-associated death in more than 30 years and the seventh measles-linked death in the United States this year, according to Ars Technica.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was “heartbroken” and connected the death to federal health policy, describing it as a reminder of what is at stake when Washington erodes decades of progress against preventable illnesses. Ars Technica reported that Hochul tied the death directly to the policies and anti-vaccine activism of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The outlet also reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention held up a related health alert as cases spread, a delay that has drawn scrutiny of the agency’s response.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services told Ars Technica that the MMR vaccine is the most effective way to prevent measles. The two outlets reported slightly different state totals: Scientific American cited 178 confirmed New York cases, concentrated in the central part of the state, while Ars Technica reported 170 cases across more than a dozen counties.
The context
The United States is experiencing its worst measles outbreak since 1991, and case numbers this year have already doubled those of 2025, which was previously the worst year since 1991, Scientific American reported. The country was declared measles-free in 2000, a status defined by 12 months without continuous local transmission; it technically still holds that designation, though experts expect that may change. Hochul declared measles a statewide disaster in New York last month. The other six US measles-linked deaths this year occurred in Pennsylvania, which has recorded more than 1,430 cases and had not seen a measles death in 35 years before this outbreak, according to Ars Technica. The outlet attributed the rise in vaccine-preventable outbreaks to slipping vaccination rates driven by health misinformation and anti-vaccine sentiment, and noted that Kennedy spent decades before taking office attacking vaccines through his organization, Children’s Health Defense. Since becoming health secretary, Kennedy has altered federal vaccine recommendations and launched studies into alleged vaccine harms, Ars Technica reported.
Why it matters
A child’s death in the country’s largest measles outbreak in more than three decades puts the human cost of declining vaccination rates in direct view, and the reported CDC delay in issuing a health alert raises questions about the federal response under Kennedy’s leadership. Children with fewer immune protections face the greatest risk, and doctors are increasingly concerned about congenital measles: if a pregnant woman contracts the disease, there is a 25 to 30 percent chance her child will also acquire it, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The CDC does not track congenital measles, Scientific American reported.
What’s next
Officials are set to meet in the coming weeks to determine whether the US measles-free status should be revised or eliminated, Scientific American reported. Public health experts warn the death may signal worse to come if vaccination rates do not recover. The circumstances and duration of the reported CDC alert delay remain unclear, as does whether the agency will face a formal review of its response.
