Three children and a teacher were killed Thursday afternoon when a 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, police said. The attacker was shot dead by a community member who chased him into the building, bringing the total number of dead to five, including the suspect.
The first 911 call came in at 12:59 p.m. local time from a person outside the school who reported that someone with a long gun was shooting into their vehicle, according to Bend Police Department spokeswoman Sheila Miller. Minutes later, county dispatch received calls reporting the shooter had entered the school. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenager forced his way inside by firing at the locks on the doors. Photos from the scene showed a red truck with bullet holes.
A bystander who saw the attack begin pursued the gunman into the school and "engaged him," Krantz said. Officers arrived three minutes later, confirmed the attacker was dead and searched the building. The slain children were 5, 8 and 11 years old. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to a hospital in critical condition, the BBC reported. Deutsche Welle reported two people were wounded in total. Police said the suspect was a local 16-year-old boy but did not release his name, and it is unclear whether he had any connection to the school.
The context
Silver Rail Elementary serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade, roughly ages 5 to 11, with about 450 students and 40 staff members, Miller said. Bend is a city of roughly 100,000 people in central Oregon, about 175 miles southeast of Portland. Local media reports cited by the BBC said the school received new classroom doors in 2022 that can be locked with the flip of a switch.
The shooting adds to a pattern of gun violence in the United States, which has the highest rate of gun-related deaths among high-income countries, Deutsche Welle reported. The Gun Violence Archive, which counts incidents in which four or more people are shot excluding the shooter, has recorded more than 365 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year, according to DW. The deadliest school shooting in U.S. history occurred at Virginia Tech in 2007, when a gunman killed 32 people.
Why it matters
A shooting that killed students as young as 5 inside an elementary school is likely to renew national debate over school safety and gun policy. The case also drew attention because an armed civilian, not police, stopped the attacker. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek thanked the community member who "heroically intervened" to prevent further loss of life, while acknowledging the emotional toll on that person. School district official Steven Cook said the community was "stunned and heartbroken," and Kotek said no parent or community should have to endure such a day.
What’s next
Police have not identified the suspect or the victims, and investigators have not established whether the attacker had any ties to the school; a motive remains unclear. Two wounded people, a 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher, were hospitalized in critical condition as of the latest police updates. Students were being bused to a separate location to reunite with families. Watch for police briefings identifying the victims and detailing the suspect's background and how he obtained the weapon.
