Google DeepMind's Hassabis Steps Aside, Jeff Dean Departs
Demis Hassabis is stepping aside as Google DeepMind CEO to become chair and Alphabet chief scientist, while Jeff Dean and other senior researchers leave to found the AI startup Discovery Loop.

Google announced a major reorganization of its artificial intelligence leadership on Wednesday. Demis Hassabis, a DeepMind co-founder who has led the lab since Google acquired it, is handing off day-to-day management to become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at parent company Alphabet, CEO Sundar Pichai said. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer, will run the lab as senior vice president, reporting directly to Pichai, while also keeping his role as Google's chief AI architect.
At the same time, several of Google's most senior AI figures are leaving the company outright. Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee and the chief scientist of Google DeepMind, is departing along with Google Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, Google Brain founding member Quoc Le and DeepMind senior research scientist Oriol Vinyals. The group is founding Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation that aims to use AI to speed up scientific research. Dean reportedly plans to serve as its CEO, according to TechCrunch.
Hassabis framed his move around long-term goals, telling staff in a memo, "I've been working towards AGI my whole life and now, like many of you, I feel it is close at hand." He will continue to run Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's AI drug-development unit, and said he will keep advising Pichai and DeepMind leadership on strategic and artificial general intelligence matters.
The context
DeepMind conducts the foundational research behind Google's Gemini models, making it central to the company's AI efforts. Ars Technica reported that Google was initially caught off guard by the generative AI boom after Microsoft's Copilot reveal but has since become a leading AI developer, even as a string of high-profile departures has continued. Hassabis has been one of the most prominent voices predicting the arrival of artificial general intelligence, and he has repeatedly said AI's top application should be human health, including efforts to cure diseases such as cancer through Isomorphic Labs. Dean spent decades at Google and is described by TechCrunch as one of its longest-serving and most influential executives. Using AI to accelerate scientific discovery has drawn interest for years but, per TechCrunch, only recently began moving beyond experimental work toward commercial application.
Why it matters
The changes reshape the leadership of one of the world's most influential AI labs at once: its co-founder is moving to an oversight role, and several researchers behind Google's core AI advances are leaving entirely. How DeepMind performs under Kavukcuoglu will affect Google's position in the competition over frontier AI models. Discovery Loop's founders say they want to automate complete experimental loops and are interested in using AI to build more powerful AI, an approach known as recursive self-improvement, which could influence both scientific research and the pace of AI development itself.
What’s next
Discovery Loop announced Wednesday that its initial funding round is co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with participation from Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed and Doerr Capital; Alphabet is a founding investor, Pichai said. The startup's timeline, product plans and funding total have not been detailed in the announcements. Watch how Kavukcuoglu organizes DeepMind under the new reporting line to Pichai, and whether additional senior researchers follow the departing group.
