The approximate age of a white-oak dugout canoe that a volunteer diver discovered while cleaning trash from the bottom of a Wisconsin lake. Indigenous communities near present-day Milwaukee hand-carved the vessel between roughly 992 and 1049 C.E. — nearly a millennium before it turned up during a routine cleanup dive.
